<p><strong>2011 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc &#8211; 96 points</strong></p>
<p>A 70/30% blend, 29% was barrel-fermented and spent two months in new French oak. The bouquet is fragrant and flowery, with passionfruit and citrus, the palate with great purity, line and length, grapefruit, oak and perfectly balanced acidity in a continuous stream of flavour carrying through to the aftertaste. Will develop superbly. Screwcap, 13% alc.</p>

<strong>2009 Cabernet Sauvignon &#8211; 96 points</strong><br />
The Fraser Gallop project is an exciting one to follow. Backed by the trio of the &#8217;07,&#8217;08 and &#8217;09 vintages, it&#8217;s not missed a beat and is delivering wine quality that knocks on the door of Margaret River hierarchy. This shows a beautifully ripened cabernet nose: purple cherry and cassis, ripe herbs, violets and gravel, all handsomely dressed in cedary, sweetly spiced oak. The palate&#8217;s rolled out in impeccably elegant fashion: smooth mid-palate tannins build gentle grain and grip towards the finish, holding fresh cherry, plum, cassis and mulberry flavour throughout. A pristine, youthful cabernet with faultless balance &#8211; hard to beat for value.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>2009 Cabernet Sauvignon – GOLD STAR – BEST IN CLASS</strong></p>
<p>Judges comments &#8211; Inky dark crimson red with a tiny brick edge. Luscious perfume of fruit and spice erupts from the glass, crushed black currant, damson plum, whiffs of rosemary, cedar and vanilla, tobacco leaf, cardamom, leather and red earth. The palate is sensational. Cascade after cascade of intricate flavours and textures all swirling around a dense tight core of fruit and tannin, spiked with fresh acidity. This whirlwind of delight keeps the palate entertained long after the wine has left the mouth.</p>

<p><strong>Best of the West &#8211; Most Improved</strong><br />
Has moved into a new zone with recent chardonnay and oak-influenced semillon sauvignon blancs being exceptional. The estate was established by Nigel Gallop to focus on cabernet, but other varieties are excellent. Winemaker Clive Otto is doing an outstanding job.</p>
<p><strong>Best of the West &#8211; Blended white (oaked)</strong><br />
2010 Parterre<br />
Fast becoming the benchmark for this heavily worked blended white from Margaret River. The mix of semillon and sauvignon blanc gets both extended barrel fermentation and some stainless steel, creating a cleaver balance between the layered richness of the barrel components and the lively freshness from the tanks. Works just so well and perfect for the cellar as an alternative style.</p>

A wine with a voice. Clive Otto is crafting wines of real elegance and purity. Bright aromas of blackcurrant and cherry are reflected on the palate along with black olive and cedary oak. A double-trophy winner at the 2010 Margaret River Wine Show in November, the blend is predominantly cabernet sauvignon but includes small portions of petit verdot, merlot and malbec.</p>
<p><strong>2010 Chardonnay &#8211; 18.5 &#8211; GOLD</strong><br />
Unanimous support from the panel for this fresh young chardonnay displaying clear varietal fruit interwoven with well-judged oak. The palate is smooth and rich with impeccable balance and persistence. Another feather in the cap for Clive &#8216;Mr Consistency&#8217; Otto and the rest of the winemaking team at Fraser Gallop Estate.</p>

<p>2009 Cabernet Sauvignon</p>
<p>It spends 12 months in oak and is made by Clive Otto. The 2008 edition was excellent and I’ve been looking forward to trying more of the 2009 reds from Margaret River – so I ripped the top off this shortly after it came in.</p>
<p>It’s a sturdy, almost muscular wine with chalky, sinewy tannin and a focus on line and length. By that I mean that it’s not a plump or particularly voluptuous wine; it tastes of gravel and backcurrant and gumnuts but the tannin kicks early, pulling these flavour confidently/assertively through the finish.</p>
<p>Classic cabernet styling. Excellent persistence. It needs some time but it looks set for a very bright future.</p>

Tasted as a triple treat of 2009 Margaret River Cabernet Merlots alongside McHenry Hohnen and Flametree. All very good wines, all similar..but a little different. I’ll write them all up but meanwhile here’s the most well mannered of the three.<br />
Chocolate and mulberry with particularly fine oak treatment – it’s ripe, but not over, with just a little waft of dried herb regional perfume in the background. In the mouth crisp and medium bodied with fine soft tannins and an appropriate level of grip on the finish. It’s quite a light style, and not especially concentrated, which no doubt forms part of its appeal. Gentle sophistication at a fair price.  </p>
